The Federal Government has this week introduced legislation to make life a little easier for employers making late superannuation guarantee contributions.

The Assistant Treasurer, Mal Brough has announced that the Government has introduced amending legislation which will effectively allow employers an extra month with respect to the payment of superannuation guarantee contributions.

Mr Brough said that currently employers who made a late contribution to a supeannuation fund faced paying the amount again as late contributions could not be used to offset the employer’s liability to the superannuation guarantee charge payable to the Australian Taxation Office.

He said that under the new arrangements, employer contributions made for an employee to a super fund within one month of the superannuation guarantee due date could be used to offset the portion of any superannuation guarantee charge for the quarter that related to that employee.

However, the minister said that to ensure a strong incentive remained for employers to make superannuation guarantee payments by the due date, late payments would not be tax deductible.
