The relatively young membership demographic of industry fund Hostplus has given it a greater ability to invest in unlisted assets over the long haul, according to its chief executive, David Elia.
Commenting on Hostplus generating a top quartile performance for the past financial year, Elia stressed the manner in which unlisted assets delivered his fund downside protection during periods of market volatility.
For the financial year ended 30 June 2016, the Hostplus Balanced MySuper option delivered a five per cent return to members against an industry median of 2.81 per cent, according to the SuperRatings SR50 Balanced Performance survey.
"One of the benefits of having a relatively young member demographic like Hostplus is that it gives us much greater ability to invest in unlisted markets, such as property, infrastructure and private equity over the long term," Elia said.
"In turn, our unlisted assets provide the fund with broader investment diversification and the downside protection from the volatile nature of listed markets that accompany increased global uncertainty."
