Herbert Smith Freehills has opened its first offices in Germany, choosing the major cities of Berlin and Frankfurt to house its German operations as Herbert Smith Freehills Germany LLP.
The offices will enhance the firm's delivery of origin-to-destination legal services across a single global platform for its clients.
Herbert Smith Freehills senior partner Jonathan Scott said its first partner in Germany, Ralf Thaeter, had a strong track record as a leading M&A lawyer, which would be appealing to existing and new clients, locally and globally.
"Our enhanced global platform will also benefit German businesses with whom we can work on cross-border initiatives," he said.
Thaeter had worked for the law firm for many years prior to his appointment, and said it was an exciting time to join the company and spearhead its entry into the German market.
Partner and global co-head of Herbert Smith Freehills Corporate, Patrick Mitchell, said the Frankfurt office would become a full-service offering over time, whilst its Berlin operations would focus on corporate and regulatory work.
"Our recruitment efforts are continuing and we hope to be able to announce the appointment of additional partners in the coming months," he said.
