Australian Retirement Trust’s (ART) has appointed former Macquarie Asset Management executive Grant Smith to the fund’s Investment and Valuation Oversight Committees.
Smith will initially serve as an adviser to both committees ahead of the planned retirement of investment committee chair and board director Mark Burgess in 2027.
During a nearly 30-year career, Smith held senior investment and strategy positions across Australia and international markets, most recently as executive chair and senior managing director at Macquarie Asset Management.
His background spans investment governance, private and listed markets, organisational development and stakeholder management.
The super fund has also added former Queensland under-treasurer Mark Gray to its board, expanding its mix of public sector, infrastructure and investment expertise as the sector faces heightened scrutiny around governance and long-term member outcomes.
Gray’s experience includes senior government and corporate roles, including as Queensland office head for Macquarie Group and chair of the Northern Australian Infrastructure Facility.
He currently chairs cloud solution provider Data#3 and serves on the boards of Queensland Urban Utilities, CleanCo Queensland and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
ART chair, Helen Rowell, said the appointments were intended to strengthen the fund’s oversight capabilities amid increasingly challenging market conditions.
“In an increasingly volatile and rapidly evolving world, at ART we are keenly aware of our responsibility to deliver for our members,” Rowell said. “The global experience that Mark and Grant bring in their respective roles will serve our members well into the future.
“They understand how important it is for ART to be a patient, long-term custodian of the retirement incomes of almost one in ten Australians, and the diligence that needs to be applied to the oversight of the delivery of outcomes for ART’s members.”
Both appointments take effect from 1 June 2026.
