Mark Tierney will lend a hand to AustralianSuper's investment strategy after being appointed as investment manager for the funds macro and portfolio construction team.

Tierney will be responsible for researching the economic outlook and developing forecasts for Australia and other major global regions. He will also support allocation and sector strategies by assessing economic impacts on all assets classes.

Tierney has over 30 years' experience in financial markets and spent 12 years with Macquarie Bank as an international economist conducting research on behalf of equity and fixed income clients and providing economic commentary.

He has worked as a money market trader with the Commonwealth Bank, a currency strategist with HSBC and an international economist with Bankers Trust Australia.

Mark Delaney, AustralianSuper's chief investment officer said the appointment forms part of the fund's broader investment strategy which includes bolstering its internal investment team.

He said it was one of the first funds to appoint an investment strategist on the ground in Asia after Stephen Joske joined the team as senior manager of Asia at the start of the year.

In August last year AustralianSuper appointed Innes McKeand to the newly created role of head of equities and increased its consideration of environmental and social governance factors on investment strategy, appointing Andrew Gray to the newly created role of governance manager within the investment team last June.
