Health Super's chief investment officer, Brendon Shepherd, has announced his retirement from the post he has held for seven years, effective from January.

The fund's chief executive, Chris Clausen, said that Shepherd had brought strong leadership and direction to the role, helping to position the fund in both rising and falling markets.

"The past few years have been a volatile time for superannuation funds, but Shepherd has played an important role in ensuring that investment returns have ranked consistently in the first and second quartiles compared to our peers," he said.

Clausen will oversee the fund's investment portfolio, which represents more than $8 billion in industry assets, according to Health Super, with support from the senior investment staff until a replacement can be appointed.

Prior to joining Health Super, Shepherd worked as a senior investment analyst at Towers Perrin and UniSuper and as a fund investment analyst at BHP Billiton.
