Hockey on super policy

The Federal Opposition would oppose the imposition of mandated investment obligations on superannuation funds but has stopped short of giving any undertakings with respect to the legislative and taxation environment surrounding superannuation.

That was the bottom line of responses to an Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) luncheon by the Shadow Treasurer, Joe Hockey.

While Hockey said he would be very concerned if the Federal Government sought to impose mandated investment requirements on superannuation funds, he was less prepared to rule out the possibility of a future Coalition Government further amending the legislative and taxation regime affecting superannuation.

Hockey suggested to the ASFA luncheon that it was impossible to rule anything in or out in circumstances where the economic circumstances remained an unknown.

However, he said he had a strong aversion to the notion of mandated investments requirements, notwithstanding Australia’s level of exposure to foreign investment.
