(May-2005): Union workers in super survey

Members of the Northern Territory Public Service are being surveyed by their union, the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU), to determine whether they want to mount a campaign aimed at extracting higher employer superannuation guarantee contributions.

The CPSU has written to members covered by the Northern Territory Public Service enterprise agreement pointing out that those of them employed after 1999 are at a substantial disadvantage to many of their colleagues where employer superannuation contributions are concerned.

The union said the post-1999 workers were receiving only the minimum 9 per cent employer contribution, whereas Northern Territory public servants who are members of the Commonwealth Superannuation Scheme (CSS) or the Northern Territory Government Scheme receive substantially more.

The union said the employer contribution for members of the CSS was 20 per cent, while for members of the NT Government scheme contributing 6 per cent, the employer contribution is 18 per cent.

The union is asking members to state the percentage of salary the union should claim as the employer contribution, whether contributions should be linked to length of service and whether the employer rate should be linked to employee contributions.
