The Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Law, Senator Nick Sherry, has sought to hose-down suggestions that the Government will be moving any time soon to increase the preservation age for superannuation.
In an address to the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees in Melbourne today, Senator Sherry made clear that any changes to the preservation age would not be considered by the Government until after the Henry Review of taxation had been dealt with.
He said the Henry Review recommendations released at the same time as the Federal Budget were “in-principle recommendations” and should be regarded as such by the superannuation industry and the media.
“As I mentioned, these are in-principle recommendations. The Government will thoroughly assess the findings of the Henry Review when they are fully delivered at the end of 2009,” Sherry said.
“I would again stress for everyone here, and for all of our friends in the media, there will be no consideration by the Government of the issue of increasing the superannuation preservation age until that time,” he said.
