AUSCOAL Superannuation, QSuper and Russell Investments were among the winners at the Association of Superannuation Fund's (ASFA's) 2009 Communications Awards, which recognised excellence in superannuation fund campaigns.

The awards were held in Sydney and attracted more than 50 entries across eight categories.

The excellence in member communication category was tied three ways between AUSCOAL Superannuation Fund for its 'Your Insurance is Changing for the Better' campaign, QSuper with its 'Age 50 Lifecycle Trigger' campaign and Russell Investments for its 'Russell SuperSolution Annual Member Statement'.

Addressing those in the super industry at the awards on campaigning, ASFA chief executive Pauline Vamos said "we need to make our brand resilient".

"We need to make it easy, relevant and be proactive," Vamos said.

Although simplicity was the key in getting the right message across to fund members, Vamos said it wasn't about "dumbing it down".

Other winners included BUSS(Q) Building Super and Super SA for best public relations campaign, IOOF in the PDS of the year category, and UniSuper and Sunsuper for the electronic campaign of the year award.

Two 'special awards' for super innovator of the year and integrated campaign of the year were won by Sunsuper for its 'Sunsuper on Track' program and GESB for its 'Some Worry About the Economy, Others Get Good Advice' campaign, respectively.
