A Sydney father and son arrested at Perth International Airport late last year and subsequently extradited to NSW were in late December jailed for 18 months and fined $200,000 for contempt
The men, Anrzej Janusz Michalik and his son Martin Michalik, appeared in the NSW Supreme Court just before Christmas and were convicted of contempt of several Supreme Court orders made in August and November, last year.
The men were sentenced to 18 months each in respect of each contempt charge, to be served concurrently with a non-parole period of 12 months. They were also fined $10,000 on each of the contempt charges.
The Michaliks had earlier last year been restrained from leaving NSW or Australia on the basis of an ongoing investigation by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission into their alleged involvement in an unlicensed financial services business that offered people early access to their superannuation funds, by advertising in local newspapers.
