TelstraSuper’s business operations have been certified carbon neutral for FY21 by Climate Active.

To become carbon neutral TelstraSuper had to calculate greenhouse gas emissions generated by all business operations, then reduce those emissions by changing operations or investing in new technology and purchasing carbon offset units.

It moved its key business operations to a ‘6 Star Green Star’ rated building, utilised a smart lift system that required less energy, provided flexible working conditions to minimise commuting, and donated decommission technology to social enterprise Pony Up for Good so it can be recycled.

TelstraSuper reported to Climate Active on its carbon neutral initiatives annually and has its carbon calculations independently assessed and verified to be certified carbon neutral.

“Where emissions can’t be reduced, TelstraSuper has purchased offsets to effectively ‘neutralise’ remaining emissions,” the fund said.

“These offsets are generated by projects that reduce, remove or capture carbon emissions from the atmosphere (this includes reforestation, renewable energy and energy efficiency projects).”

Those projects were the Winds of Change project (wind power in India), Fighting Fire with Fire project (Indigenous fire management in Northern Territory), and Rainforest Protection (South America, Oceania and Africa).

Climate Active was an ongoing partnership between the Australian Government and Australian businesses designed to drive voluntary climate action.

The brand represented Australia’s collective effort to measure, reduce, and offset carbon emissions to lessen our negative impact on the environment.
